Texas Capitol Exhibit: Get Inspired by Barbara Jordan’s Legacy – Monday, February 6 – Friday, February 10 from 9:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. Celebrate Barbara Jordan’s impact on equal rights and social justice and become inspired. Designed to highlight Barbara Jordan’s lifetime of significant contributions to society as a politician, policymaker, activist and educator, the audio and visual tribute is sponsored by the Barbara Jordan Freedom Foundation. The displays are created from the archive housed at Texas Southern University, Barbara Jordan’s alma mater, with contributions from the Lyndon B. Baby Bloomers: Water Play – Monday, February 6 from 9:00 a.m. to Noon. Children age 0-3 and their families are invited to splish, splash, and explore the wonders of water. Try something new each week or build on the previous week’s activities. Crafternoon – Monday, February 6 at 3:30 p.m. Drop by the library and make a craft while you search for books, movies and music. Story Time with Tiny Tales to You (Pflugerville) – Tuesday, February 7 at 10:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. Different small farm animals will be introduced during story time. Child Protection Rally at the Capitol – Tuesday, February 7 at 2:00 p.m. Texas children need you to speak up for them. Join in urging Legislators to fully fund family support home visiting programs that prevent child abuse, fixes to Child Protective Services, and improvements in foster care. Black History Month Film Screening and Discussion: Nothing But a Man – Tuesday, February 7 at 5:30 p.m. Nothing But a Man (NR, 1964) is the story of an African-American railroad worker who marries a preacher’s daughter in Alabama. They face oppression and discrimination in this 1960s small town setting. The Fine Arts Library is also showing a display, Black History: Some Documentation, a selection of print materials that ranges from first or early editions of important works of American/Black Diaspora literature through the material referencing today’s Black Lives Matters movement. Tabletop Tuesday – Tuesday, February 7 at 5:30 p.m. Bring your friends and family for a weekly night of all things board games. There will be games available for a wide variety of ages, from ages 2 through 102. Science Under the Stars: Insects Unlocked – Thursday, February 9 from 6:15-8:00 p.m. Insects Unlocked is a public domain project from UT’s Insect Collection. In 2015, a team of student and community volunteers crowd-funded a campaign to create thousands of open, copyright-free images. From more than 200 small contributions, they built an insect photography field kit and photo studio. Hear UT grad Alejandro Santillana talk about this exciting project and how you can get involved with the UTIC. There will also be snacks, natural history displays, and activities designed for kids of all ages. Guided tours of BFL will be offered, dependent on weather and light conditions (wear sturdy shoes and bring water).
