Happening All Week

Beyond Bollywood: Indian Americans Shape the Nation Exhibit
Monday, Feb. 12 to 16 | from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. | Asian American Resource Center, 8401 Cameron Rd.
Through a vibrant collection of photographs, artifacts, art and interactive learning stations, visitors will experience the Indian American story and explore the many dynamic roles Indian Americans have played in shaping America. Complementing the exhibit, SAAM will host eight docent and educational programming days. Activities include group gallery tours, specialized programming that cover topics on Indian Immigration history, Indian Classical Dance, and Indian Jewelry, and special events such as an Indian regional fashion show, author readings, lectures, and a film screening. The exhibition is presented in partnership between City of Austin’s Asian American Resource Center (AARC) and South Asian Austin Moms (SAAM). FREE and open to the public.

Shadowing Austin
Monday, Feb. 12 to 16 | All Day | Public Art Installation, Various Locations
The City of Austin Cultural Arts Division, part of the Economic Development Department, presents Shadowing, a public art installation that utilizes city streetlights to capture and project shadows of passersby. Supported in part by an Art Works grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, the installation will catalyze communal interaction and play, and create connections – person to person and person to city. Integrating art and technology, Shadowing underscores Austin’s reputation as a hub for innovation. Launching February 5, the installation will run for six weeks, through the close of the SXSW Festival on March 18. Shadowing street lights will be positioned throughout downtown Austin at: South Congress Avenue, West Monroe Street, Rosewood Avenue, Navasota Street and East 11th Street. Kids Yoga
Monday, Feb. 12 | from 3:30 to 4:15 p.m. | Yarborough Branch, Austin Public Library, 2200 Hancock Dr.
Registered yoga instructor Ali Kamas will lead the class in this fun and playful yoga practice. It is the perfect way for boys and girls to transition from the school hours. Recommended for ages 7 – 12 years. Adult companions are welcome to participate, as well. Please bring your own yoga mat or towel.

Blazer Tag’s 19th Anniversary Celebration (Burnet)
Monday, Feb. 12 | from 4 to 9 p.m. | Blazer Tag Adventure Center, 105 CR 114, Burnet
So this one’s not exactly free but it’s pretty darn close! On Monday, Blazer Tag Adventure Center will celebrate its 19th anniversary with 19-cent laser tag games from 4 to 9 p.m. There will also be giveaways throughout the birthday celebration. This event is open to everyone and all ages are welcome.

Tuesday

Read with a Ranger
Tuesday, Feb. 13 | from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. | Zilker Ranger Station, 2105 Andrew Zilker Rd.
You and your children are invited to story time with the Park Rangers. A Ranger will read a nature-based story and follow it up with a hands-on lesson about Leave No Trace and Responsible Recreation! The event will be held indoors if raining, or in the outdoor classroom if it is clear. This program is held every Tuesday morning at 9:30 a.m. at the Zilker Caretaker Cottage.

Music Together

Black History Month Film Series – Glory

Watch and discover new films at the Austin Public Library. This screening of Glory starring Denzel Washington is FREE and open to the public.

FIT4MOM Hill Country – Valentine’s Day Play Date (Liberty Hill)

Join FIT4MOM for a play date celebrating Valentine’s Day. The kids can play and enjoy some special Valentine’s Day treats while moms can get to know the FIT4MOM Hill Country tribe. To finish off we’ll be taking pictures of moms and their kiddos as a special memento of the day. Workout from 9:30-10:30 a.m. and enjoy a play date right after. Your first class is FREE. DIY Valentine’s Day Cards

They provide the supplies, you provide the love! Make your own Valentine’ s day cards at the Co-op Art Store. Share the cards you make in store on Instagram and tag the Co-op Art Store to be entered for a chance to win an art supplies basket!

Valentine’s Day Little Library Crawl (Buda, San Leanna)
Wednesday, Feb. 14 | from 5 to 9 p.m. | Whimsical Little Library, 12514 Eagle Nest Dr., Buda
Whether you are single, dating, or part of a family, this year’s Valentine’s Day Little Library Crawl provides a free alternative to the standard Valentine Day date.  You can pick up a Reading Passport from any one of the four Little Free Libraries or you can print out the version they offer on the event site. As you visit each library, you will receive a sticker to place inside your passport. Completed passports can be submitted at the last stop for a chance to win a basket filled with items donated by local businesses and the library stewards. Each library will provide an activity or surprise to delight visitors of all ages; carnival games, wine, Blind Date with a Book, Outdoor Movie (The Princess Bride), and more! Shaping Space

Turner-Roberts Recreation is hosting a FREE art program provided by Umlauf Sculpture Garden & Museum. Program is open to all levels and the materials will be provided. This program is on Thursdays from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. and is geared toward youth ages 11 – 15 years old.

Tinkercad 3D Design Class (Pflugerville)
Thursday, Feb. 15 | from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. | Pflugerville Public Library, 1008 Pfluger St. W., Pflugerville

ARA Black History Month Artist Celebration

The ARA Black History Month Artist Celebration event is an opportunity to highlight an up-and-coming local artist by hosting a feature exhibition that will cultivate artist development and stimulate support for multi-cultural art throughout Black History Month. One of the primary goals of this art exhibition is to encourage community engagement for local artists of color. The artist exhibition will take place from 6 – 8 p.m. featuring the work of Artist Juanita Cole Towery. The celebration is FREE, family-friendly, and open to all. Music, food, and drinks will be provided.

Little Seedlings Storytime: Lunar New Year

On the day of the 2018 Lunar New Year, celebrate the year of the dog at the Asian American Resource Center and listen to the stories about our long time loyal friends, dogs, and their inspiring stories! You will create a Lunar New Year’s drum and celebrate with fun sounds after the stories.

DESPICABLE ME 3 Free Outdoor Screening
Friday, Feb. 16 | from 6:30 to 9 p.m. | The Community Cinema at Community First! Village, 9301 Hog Eye Rd.
Mobile Loaves & Fishes invites you to a FREE movie night at Community First! Village. Grab chairs and a blanket, bring family and friends, and enjoy this special screening of Despicable Me 3. Get there as early as 6:30 to explore Community First! Village, pick your spot, and enjoy your favorite movie snacks. Hot dogs, milkshakes, popcorn, candy and drinks will be available for purchase (cash preferred). The event is free, however a $5 donation would be highly appreciated. Donations can be made electronically when RSVPing to this event.

Snakes of Central Texas (Lockhart)

Local snake relocator and educator, Keelan Smith, is bringing his snakes to Lockhart State Park! Learn about these amazing animals, and meet them up close! All ages welcome. No registration required. Program will be held inside the park Recreation Hall. Please arrive a few minutes early to give yourself time to check into the park and drive up to our Rec Hall. Regular park entrance fees apply ($3/adult, free for children 12 & under). If the office is closed when you arrive, please use the self-pay station to check in.

Texas’ Own Coral Reefs: Weathering the Storm
Friday, Feb. 16 | from 7 to 8 p.m. | San Jacinto Residence Hall, 309 East 21st St. Multipurpose Room 207
Hurricane Harvey dumped thirteen trillion gallons of rain on southeast Texas in August of 2017. Do extreme storm events like Harvey impact the coral reefs off Texas’ coast, in the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary? Dr. Correa shares ongoing research connecting the Gulf Coast, extreme weather, and reef ecosystems.
