Another wonderful Austin weekend is here, and there are so many great things to do in and around town. Here are the top 10 FREE Austin events happening this weekend.

  1. Mozart’s 10th Annual Joyous Light Show – FINAL DATES!
    Friday through Sunday, January 3 through 5 | from 6 to 10 p.m. | Mozart’s Coffee Roasters

    The Mozart’s Joyous Light Show is coming to a close! Celebrate the end of the season with magical lights, delicious hot chocolate, tasty treats, and a wonderful time for the whole family.
  2. Friday Night Bluegrass
    Friday, January 3 | from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. | Jester King

    Jester King Brewery has partnered with the Central Texas Bluegrass Association to feature some of the most talented bluegrass musicians in central Texas every Friday night from 6:30 to 9:30pm in our Jester King pole barn! We pride ourselves on Jester King being a fun, friendly, quality place for our local community, and we’re pleased to pair our food and drink with some excellent music every Friday night. Free and open to all ages!
  3. Drawing Salon at the Ney
    Saturday, January 4 | from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. | Elisabet Ney
    Museum, 304 East 44th Street
    Once again, The Ney is offering the beloved weekly Drawing Salons every Saturday morning in January from 10 am to noon! Sketch Elisabet’s magnificent sculptures as your models, in her own studio! Or capture the textures of plaster, marble, limestone, wood, and more. Each session is hosted by our Museum Educators, and all of the required materials will be provided. Participation is free and open to everyone, regardless of age or level of experience! No RSVP is required!
  4. First Saturdays at Brentwood Social House
    Saturday, January 4 | from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. | Brentwood Social House, 1601 West Koenig Lane
    Join every first Saturday at the house we call home! Our morning shows at Brentwood Social House include songs for kids and jokes for parents… or is it the Other way around? Sing-a-longs, puppets, arts and crafts, ukuleles and more! They’re pleased to be partnering with Groundwork Music Project for ukulele demonstrations for newcomers in our final 30 minutes together! This project is supported in part by the Cultural Arts Division of the City of Austin Economic Development Department.
  5. Tech Familia – Virtual Reality Workshop
    Saturday, January 4 | from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. | Austin Public Library, Cepeda Branch, 651 North Pleasant Valley Road

    The Cepeda Branch of the Austin Public Library and Latinitas are providing a series of technology-based workshops for the whole family to enjoy. Join us every first Saturday for FREE activity sessions to explore the latest technology such as Virtual Reality, Robotics, Animation, 3D Printing, and Drones. It’s a fun and educational way to introduce the latest in tech and spend time with family. Recommended for ages eight and up, but little siblings are welcome.

  6. Sew Much Fun

    Make your own stuffed felt friend. We have all the materials you need to create dinosaurs, unicorns, stars, and more. Each session, we’ll work on a new project. All ages and experience levels are welcome. Note: we will be working with sharp sewing needles. This session, you’ll make felt pigs.

  9. H-E-B Free First Sunday: Stylish
    Sunday, January 5 | from 12 to 5 p.m. | Bob Bullock Museum, 1800 Congress Avenue

    Enjoy FREE exhibition admission all day during H-E-B Free First Sundays, held the first Sunday of every month. Families can explore the Story of Texas through three floors of exhibitions that showcase artifacts from around the state. Join from 12 to 3 p.m. for these special activities in honor of the new exhibition Fashion Forward:
    Sing and dance along to some stylish beats with Groundwork Music Project. Join in the musical fun and pick up a ukulele and learn to play.
    Design scented sachets and practice sewing with activities for all ages provided by iKids U.

  10. Children’s Right to Vote Protest
    Sunday, January 5 | at 3 p.m. | Texas State Capitol, 1100 Congress Avenue

    Meet in front of the main entrance of the state capital building on 11th Street. remember that this is a peaceful protest and we need to stay out of the street please use all sidewalk Street Crossings areas appropriately. also we need to make sure that we are not standing in the street impeding traffic. If you cannot make it to our protest in the Austin area please consider starting one at your state capitol or City Hall. we can work with you to help make that happen.
