Weekend Top 10 FREE Events: August 2-4, 2019

Another wonderful weekend is here, and there are so many great things to do in and around Austin. Here are the top 10 FREE Austin events happening this weekend.

  1. Summer Family Play Groups

    Looking for a fun way to beat the Texas heat this summer? Come play, learn & explore with your child at the Y! Discover our interactive stations at the YMCA two times a month this summer! Come and enjoy our tumbling station, imagination station, puzzle station group circle time and more. Open to families with children up to 6-years-old. Locations in North Austin, East Austin and Downtown Austin!
  2. Colony Park Back to School Bash

    Mark your calendars for Friday, August 2 from 5 to 7 p.m.! The City of Austin Economic Development Department, Colony Park Neighborhood Association and partners are excited to host the second annual Colony Park Back to School Bash. We want to ensure students return to the new school year healthy, prepared and motivated to learn. This family-friendly event will feature a resource fair with services to support both students and families in preparing for the new school year. This event will also feature live music, free backpacks stuffed with school supplies, free food, outdoor activities, raffle prizes and much more. We invite you to bring your superhero costumes and celebrate the start of a new school year! 
  3. Cedar Park First Friday (Cedar Park)

    Ever wonder what artists in Cedar Park are up to? Join Cedar Park Pottery as we host a variety of local artists at August’s Cedar Park First Friday! Every first Friday of the month Cedar Park Pottery invites residents to the studio & gallery to support local art in a variety of mediums while enjoying live music and mingling over light appetizers. Plus, what better place to meet new friends than over a pottery wheel-throwing demonstration!?!
  4. A Star Is Born Free Outdoor Screening w/ Live Music
    Friday, August 2 | from 8 to 11 p.m. | Community Cinema & Amphitheater, 9301 Hog Eye Rd

    Mobile Loaves & Fishes invites you to a free movie night at our Community First! Village. Grab chairs and a blanket, bring family and friends, and enjoy this special screening. Austin musician Tyler Stuckey will perform a live musical set before the movie begins! Come explore Community First! Village, pick your spot, and enjoy your favorite movie snacks from the Community Grille. Burgers, french fries, snacks, and drinks will be available for purchase (cards only, cash no longer accepted). The event is free, however a $5 donation would be highly appreciated. Donations can be made via donation bucket at the venue.
  5. Market Eatery Festival
    Saturday, August 3 | All Day | H Mart, 11301 Lakeline Blvd.

    The first installment of what will be an annually recurring event, the Market Eatery Festival offers a full immersion into the North Austin’s cultural and culinary mecca! Attendees can feast on tons of free food samples as well as discounted specials from HMART’s food hall vendors. Thirsty guests can enjoy 79 cent cans of Sapporo Premium Light beer and discounts on Soju and Korean wines. Those looking to shop can also enjoy exclusive discounts on select Korean Beauty products. The festival will feature face painting, balloon twisting and themed Nail Art from Nails Y’all as well as a raffle benefitting Kids in a New Groove. Tickets are 1 for $5 and 3 for $12 and prizes include a Dimchae Refrigerator, KuHAUS Premium Slow Juicer more. Participants must be present to win. This event is FREE, family-friendly and open to the public. Food samples will be available from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Food and drink specials as well as shopping discounts will run all day.
  6. Artisan Mercado
    Saturday, August 3 | from 10 to 3 p.m. | Old Bakery & Emporium

    The Artisan Mercado© sells locally-crafted, fine jewelry, glassware, ceramics, and  tapestry pillows; Mexican, Colombian and African dresses, handbags and crafts; and Honduran, Mexican  and Texan paintings, prints and mixed media. The marketplace is free and open to the public. This project is supported in part by the Cultural Arts Division of the City of Austin Economic Development Department, Mexic-Arte Museum and La Pena, Inc. 
  7. Austin Birthday Bash

    The Downtown Austin Alliance invites you to the second annual Austin’s Birthday Bash at Republic Square. Join us for a free celebration of the city we love with great food, fun and games, and a live music lineup you don’t want to miss!   8. Splash Bash Back to School Party

    Bring your friends for a fun day in the sun at the J! We’ll have swimming, live music, inflatable slip ‘n slide, sno-cones, and food for purchase, rain or shine! JCC Membership is open to all.
  9. H-E-B Free First Sunday
    Sunday, August 4 | from 12 to 5 p.m. | Bullock Texas State History Museum, 1800 Congress Ave.
    Enjoy FREE exhibition admission all day during Free First Sundays, held the first Sunday of every month. Families can explore the Story of Texas through three floors of exhibitions that showcase artifacts from around the state.
  10. The Hartman Foundation Concerts in the Park
    Sunday, August 4 | from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. | Long Center for the Performing Arts, 701 W Riverside
    Kids frolicking, couples lounging on blankets, old friends in their trusty folding chairs, lone bicyclists and pedestrians who have been distracted from their destinations—all united by the sound of music. The Hartman Foundation “Concerts in the Park,” presented by the Austin Symphony Orchestra, brings together ardent enthusiasts and unwitting attendees alike just as similar events did in town centers years ago. In its 17th summer season, these free ensemble concerts take place in the Hartman Concert Park in front of the Long Center City Terrace and run on Sunday evenings from June 2nd through August 25th at 7:30 p.m. A gift from the Hartman Family Foundation, these concerts are presented to the Austin community in thanks for its continued, generous support. Each Sunday a different ensemble of the Austin Symphony will be featured at the new Hartman Park, located on the grounds of the Long Center for the Performing Arts, performing music from jazz and light classical to pops selections and film scores. Concertgoers are encouraged to bring a picnic dinner and blanket and make it a group outing.
