On Saturday, I flew from Austin to New York City to eat Texas barbecue and hear live music inspired by Austin! In town for the Ricki and the Flash press junket, I was treated to an evening of live music and “music to your mouth” at New York City’s Hill Country Barbecue Market.
Hill Country — a rustic joint dedicated to “honoring the Barbecue and Live Music Capital of Texas” — offers a little slice of Texas goodness in The Big Apple. With hardwood floors, an oversized Texas star hanging above the stairwell, longhorn paintings, and SXSW posters adorning the walls, I felt right at home.
There was even a framed photo of Rick Perry on the wall, above a proclamation declaring Hill Country’s barbecue sauce as the best outside of Texas. So, it must be true. The food was all delicious, I can attest to that.
Late in the evening, Hill Country transformed into a honky tonk, and a band with a Texas twang took the stage. (The restaurant has no cover, if you ever find yourself in New York City with a craving for a taste of home!)
Before eating my weight in deviled eggs and brisket, I attended an advance press screening of Ricki and the Flash, starring Meryl Streep (Ricki) and Rick Springfield (Gary, the bass player in the band The Flash). The film is packed with ten rock ‘n’ roll songs, which were performed live in the movie, in a hole in the wall similar to the basement bar in Hill Country Barbecue Market. Bloggers from around the country met in New York City to see the movie in the swanky Sony screening room, followed by a Ricki-themed rocking evening at Hill Country Barbecue Market, complete with awesome live music, and later an interview with the cast. It was an amazing experience! Stay tuned for that interview and movie review, later this week.
