When my friend, and fellow Austin blogger, Jamie Dorobek announced the upcoming release of her first book, C.R.A.F.T. – Creating Really Awesome Free Things – 100 Seriously Fun, Super-Easy Projects for Kids, I immediately jumped on Amazon to order a copy. So did many others–within a week the book was Amazon’s #1 Bestseller in Crafts for Children and all of the Amazon reviewers gave the book 5-stars. For good reason.  The book is gorgeous and the craft ideas are delightful!  Plus, something this non-crafty mama loves, the instructions for the 100 projects are so easy to follow that kids can craft all by themselves.

Free Fun In Austin continues to highlight Austin area locations and activities that may not be available at this time. We encourage you to take all safety measures to keep yourself and your neighbors safe. It is our hope that the stories and features on this site will help inform your plans in the future.

One morning last week, my seven-year-old rose before dawn, found the book (which was supposed to be a Christmas present), and got right to work. By the time I woke up, he had several hand-crafted gifts waiting for me: an owl made out of a paper plate, an upcycled soup can pencil holder, a clothespin mechanical toy, a necklace, and a toilet paper roll critter!  And he wasn’t done. He had bookmarked all of the projects he still wanted to work on.

The amazing thing about Creating Really Awesome Free Things is that all 100 projects are designed to be made out of materials you can find at home, so you don’t need to buy supplies. As Jamie says in the book’s introduction, “Did you know that you can make monster feet out of tissue boxes? A sheep out of a ziptop bag and some shredded paper? A watch for dress-up out of an empty toilet paper tube? Creativity is contagious, and throughout Creating Really Awesome Free Things you’ll find 100 fun and easy kid crafts that teach you how to use what you have to make some super-fun free things!”

For endless crafty fun and entertainment, check out Creating Really Awesome Free Things on Amazon! It’s just $11.83.
