I like to think of myself as a well seasoned skater mom. While I may not know all of the skater terms, I’ve traveled across many states and even Europe with a skateboard-toting son in hand in search of the best skate parks to be found. In Paris, we walked for miles…. miles, I tell you, in search of one particular skate park that had excellent reviews. In Germany, we drove well out of our way in search of both indoor and outdoor parks to round out our European skate park tour. After checking out dozens of parks over the past eight years, both at home and abroad, we were both surprised and delighted to find some of the very best right here in Central Texas!
Austin and the surrounding communities have really stepped up to create safe, clean and attractive skate parks over the past five years. Our favorite park is brand new and also the largest in Texas. After years of planning and lobbying, the park opened in the summer of 2012 and is literally located a hop, skip and a jump from our house in Pflugerville. Years in the making, the Northeast Metropolitan Skate/BMX Park boasts not one but two bowls, handrails, ramps and lots of room for Skaters, BMXers and Rollerbladers to skate around.
The City of Austin has temporarily banned public gatherings. Please stay home. The Free Fun in Austin calendar is only for live digital events at this time.
I can safely say that the photo below means nothing to my son or most likely any other kid at the skate park, but, as a mom, I was really impressed by the fact that they have onsite bathrooms that are clean. You can never have too many clean bathrooms at parks.
And see that guy going into one of the restrooms? Yep, they have park rangers patrolling the area. I was told that they are there often, a relief after hearing some not-so-pleasant stories of drug deals and fights at another local skate park.
If you have younger children in tow who have yet to drop into skating, there just so happens to be a park with a water feature close by. There is a huge sandpit that has a shade covering for those brutal summer days, and it is within close proximity to the skate park portion of the park so mama bear can keep an eye on all of her little cubs at once.
Who said you couldn’t please everyone at the same time? Let’s talk about them opening a wine bar on site and then maybe mama will be happy, too!
