Before it gets too terribly toasty outside, why not pack a picnic for a morning outing to a local, historical farm site? Green Gate Farms, located near the Travis County Expo Center (home of Austin Rodeo), invites parents who want to introduce their children to sustainable agriculture to enjoy Free Fridays at the Farm. Every Friday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Austin families can visit the small, certified organic farm at no charge.
During Free Fridays at the Farm, you may take a self-guided tour of the grounds, pet the pigs, visit the horse, see the goats and chickens, and head over to the Children’s Garden. The tour won’t take long, as the farm is not very large, but kids can play in the garden if you’d like to make a morning of it. There are a few tricycles, tree swings, a tractor tire sandbox, and a teepee to explore. The farm has blankets you can borrow for a picnic. After lunch, check out the little farm stand, which is open every Friday (in season), from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Families can visit on Fridays with no registration, but if you will be bringing a big group, the farm would appreciate a heads up. You can give them a call at 512-484-2746.
Green Gate Farms operates the farm stand on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays (make sure to check the website for current hours), but Friday is the only day families are invited to play for free. Farm tours are offered every Saturday at noon ($10), and school/corporate field trips are also available.
For more information, visit the Green Gate Farms website. Find directions to the farm here.
