Thursday, January 18

Third Thursday at The Blanton

Kick off 2018 with a free day of art, music, and inspiration! January’s Third Thursday is filled with art-filled activities and we’ll be open late until 9 p.m., so plenty of time to explore! Museum admission is always free on Thursdays. More info on this week’s schedule of events here.

An Evening with Dolores Huerta

Southwestern University’s Coalition for Diversity and Social Justice and Kappa Delta Chi present “An Evening with Dolores Huerta,” an Office of Diversity Education Lecture and the Jessie Daniel Ames Endowed Lecture in Feminist Studies, on ThursdayJan. 18th at 6:00 p.m. in Olin 105. Dolores Huerta is an activist and labor leader who has worked to improve social and economic conditions for farm workers and to fight discrimination. To further her cause, she created the Agricultural Workers Association (AWA) in 1960 and co-founded what would become the United Farm Workers (UFW). Huerta stepped down from the UFW in 1999, but she continues her efforts to improve the lives of workers, immigrants and women.

Speaker Series: The Hummingbirds of Texas
Thursday, Jan. 18 | from 7 to 8 p.m. | Hyde Park Christian Church, 610 E. 45th St.
Biologist Kelly Bryan will profile the 19 species of hummingbirds on the Texas list, and the contribution of bird banding to our understanding of the occurrence and distribution of species. He will also report on the first U.S record of the Amethyst-throated Hummingbird, found in the Davis Mountains in October, 2016.

Seeing Beyond What is Real

Like modern-day Surrealists, these emerging Austin artists are pushing the envelopes of realism to explore and connect the worlds of observable reality with the deeper realities of the imagination. Their works are at once narrative and provocative, inviting viewers into their individual and collective subconscious. In daring to look beyond that which is merely seen, we can expect the unexpected, see the familiar as strange, make perfect sense of the illogical, and understand truths that transcend time and culture. Artist reception is happening from 6 to 9 p.m.

Mobile Loaves & Fishes invites you to a free movie night at the Community First! Village. Grab chairs and a blanket, bring family and friends, and enjoy this special screening of 10 Things I Hate About You. Get there as early as 6:30 to explore Community First! Village, pick your spot, and enjoy your favorite movie snacks. Burgers, Hot dogs, milkshakes, popcorn, candy and drinks will be available for purchase at our Community Grille (cash & cards accepted). The event is free, however a $5 donation would be highly appreciated.

One Eye Open at Cafe Mueller

Enjoy a FREE bluegrass/ country show at Café Mueller. One Eye Open is an upbeat four-piece bluegrass band out of Austin, featuring fine pickin’, male and female vocals, with interests ranging from Monroe to Leadbelly, Hank Williams to Hot Rize, Bob Wills to Blue Highway, and Scruggs to Johnny Rodriguez.

Free January Swing Lessons and Dance

Come to the weekly swing dance lesson and dance for free in January. Make friends and jam to some fun music in a great South Congress venue. Learn the basics of Lindy Hop! 6 – 7 p.m. – Intermediate class for people who already know the basic lindy swing-out. 7 – 8 p.m. – Beginner class.  8 – 10 p.m. – Social dance. Usually the class and dance are only $5, but for the month of January there is no charge at all!
