Award Winning Thalea String Quartet Concert

Following their sold-out performance at Carnegie Hall, the award-winning Thalea String Quartet presents their debut recital as the new Young Professional String Quartet in Residence at UT’s Butler School of Music. The program will be starting off with Joseph Haydn’s edgy Opus 20 No. 3 string quartet in G minor, a rarely performed and romantic work by African-American composer William Grant Still, and Dmitri Shostakovich’s dark and exciting 3rd string quartet written in 1946. Admission is Free, no tickets required.

Austin-based writer and Texas historian Joe Nick Patoski launches his latest book, a gonzo history of the City of the Violet Crown, titled AUSTIN TO ATX: THE HIPPIES, PICKERS, SLACKERS & GEEKS WHO TRANSFORMED THE CITY OF AUSTIN. Patoski will read from and discuss the book with Austin American-Statesman writer Michael Barnes, followed by a book signing. Legendary Austin musician and songwriter Jon Dee Graham will perform a short set of Austin songs. Books will be available for purchase on site through BookPeople.

While tasty treats and fancy feathers may work for many animals, clones need some special dating advice. Join us this month to discover how an all-female clonal fish joins the dating scene! Science Under the Stars is a free public outreach lecture series in Austin, Texas. The talk will be held outdoors. Snacks, kids activities, and displays of local animals and plants found at Brackenridge Field Laboratory will be available at 6 p.m., followed by a guided tour of the field lab (wear sturdy shoes and bring water). Talk begins at 7 p.m. with a Q&A at 7:45.

The event will celebrate Love Austin Music Month and Black History Month. The Carver is the only branch of the Austin Public Library to house a vinyl collection. Music will be curated by Austin musicians Melat and DJ Ra QUI QUI, who will play selections from the Carver Library collection along with a few of their personal favorites. This event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be provided.
