February is going strong and so is our list of FREE date night ideas in Austin.

Tuesday, February 6

Beyond Bollywood: Indian Americans Shape the Nation
Tuesday, Feb. 6 | from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. | Asian American Resource Center, 8401 Cameron Rd.
Through a vibrant collection of photographs, artifacts, art and interactive learning stations, visitors will experience the Indian American story and explore the many dynamic roles Indian Americans have played in shaping America. Complementing the exhibit, South Asian Austin Moms will host eight docent and educational programming days. Activities include group gallery tours, specialized programming that cover topics on Indian Immigration history, Indian Classical Dance, and Indian Jewelry, and special events such as an Indian regional fashion show, author readings, lectures, and a film screening. Beyond Bollywood: Indian Americans Shape the Nation was created by the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center and the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service. The City of Austin Parks and Recreation Department, Museums and Cultural Programs Division is an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institute. On display until April 8, you can learn more here.

Shadowing Austin
Tuesday, Feb. 6 | All Day | Public Art Installation, Various Locations
The City of Austin Cultural Arts Division, part of the Economic Development Department, presents Shadowing, a public art installation that utilizes city streetlights to capture and project shadows of passersby. Supported in part by an Art Works grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, the installation will catalyze communal interaction and play, and create connections – person to person and person to city. Integrating art and technology, Shadowing underscores Austin’s reputation as a hub for innovation. Launching February 5, the installation runs for six weeks, through the close of the SXSW Festival on March 18. Shadowing street lights will be positioned throughout downtown Austin at: South Congress Avenue, West Monroe Street, Rosewood Avenue, Navasota Street and East 11th Street. Open Mic Night

2nd Street Social

2ND Street District is spreading the love this Valentine’s Day with the return of 2ND Street Social. Join the 2ND Street Dictrict and sip on refreshing beverages while shopping in-store specials from a variety of homegrown and national brands, including La Condesa, ModCloth, and Violet Crown, Popbar, and more. In addition to offerings throughout the 2ND Street District, lll Forks, the French-inspired steak and seafood restaurant, will provide a one-night-only prix fixed dinner during the community-wide event.

Valentine’s Wine Walk at Hill Country Galleria

On the second Thursday of each month, Hill Country Galleria hosts their Wine Walk event, where guests can shop the eclectic mix of retailers while sampling great wines from around the world. Guests can start at the Twin Liquors to grab a map that also acts as a ticket to each stop. The first 100 attendees will receive a pink swag bag filled with Hill Country Galleria offers! Science Under The Stars

Between the Ebola epidemic, Zika epidemic, and this year’s bad flu season, it seems every month there is a new disease in the news. Have you ever wondered what public health officials are doing behind the scenes to combat the spread of these diseases? Head to Science Under the Stars this February to discover how disease detectives predict and respond to these types of outbreaks, and learn how you can help them out! Science Under the Stars is a FREE public outreach lecture series. Starting at 6:30 pm.m, food and displays of local animals and plants found at Brackenridge Field Laboratory will be available. Also, meet with their children’s division for fun activities designed for all ages. Talks begin at 7, followed by a Q&A with the speaker.

Free Dark Girls (2011) Screening – That’s My Face Film Series

This young adult film series is FREE and open to the public. Dark Girls is a documentary exploring the deep-seated biases and attitudes about skin color—particularly dark skinned women, outside of and within the Black American culture. Film is not rated. For more information on film, click here.

An American In Paris

The Notebook Free Outdoor Screening

Mobile Loaves & Fishes invites you to a free movie night at the Community First! Village. Come as early as 6:30 p.m. to explore Community First! Village, pick your spot, and enjoy your favorite movie snacks. Hot dogs, milkshakes, popcorn, candy and drinks will be available for purchase (cash preferred). The event is FREE, however a $5 donation would be highly appreciated.

EYES WITHOUT A FACE 2
Friday, Feb. 9 | from 7 to 10 p.m. | Mondo Gallery, 4115 Guadalupe St.
Artist Jason Edmiston returns to the Mondo Gallery with a huge collection of original art for “EYES WITHOUT A FACE 2,” showcasing 100 new acrylic paintings and preliminary pencils of iconic pop culture eyes from movies, TV, comics, games and more. The show kicks off with this opening night reception that’s FREE and open to the public. Following the opening reception, the show will run during regular gallery hours (12 – 6 p.m.) through February 17 (closed Sundays and Mondays).

The Empty Mug Project

Austin Cave Festival

Join the celebration of cave habitat and groundwater at this free, family-friendly event that will feature hands-on activities, cave explorations, guided hikes, science and adventure presentations, videos, live music, and more. Visitors will have the opportunity to meet animals that call Austin’s caves home, try on caving gear, and learn how to protect and conserve Austin’s water resources.

Unspoken Words

Unspoken Words is a performance of 12 letters written by complete strangers. They were asked to respond to the prompt “What’s something you’ve always wanted to say to a loved one, but never had the chance?” This resulted in some very honest, hilarious, and even heartbreaking responses. Some of these sentiments will never reach the person they’re intended for. This will be the first and last time anyone hears them.
