March is not only one of the most beautiful months in Austin, it’s also one of the windiest. Take advantage of the nice spring weather by gathering up your family and friends and attending one of the most beloved and popular events Austin has to offer. This Sunday, March 4, 2012, Austinites will flock to Zilker Park for the Zilker Kite Festival, an Austin tradition since it began in 1929 as a way to encourage creativity in children. The event lasts from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. and is FREE and open to the public. Dogs too!
Activities at the Kite Festival include several kite contests and kite flying demonstrations, as well as a kite making workshop open from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m., where you can build a kite that flies in about 10 minutes! The festival also features a bouncy house, rock wall, face painting, bungee jumping and more (some activities cost extra). Don’t want to fly a kite? That’s okay! You’re welcome to sit back an watch the amazing kite-filled sky if you wish.
Free Fun In Austin continues to highlight Austin area locations and activities that may not be available at this time. We encourage you to take all safety measures to keep yourself and your neighbors safe. It is our hope that the stories and features on this site will help inform your plans in the future.
The Kite Festival is FREE, and food is allowed (no glass or styrofoam please!), but attendees may want to bring a few bucks for concessions, t-shirts, or to buy a kite if you decide not to make or bring one and want to join in the fun.
